Police are investigating a shooting in northeast Calgary in the community of Monterey Park that left one person dead.
They were called to the 100 block of Del Ray Road shortly before 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
A body was clearly visible underneath a tarp in the alley behind Del Ray Road.
Bob Lewis, who lives across the street, was making bread when he heard what sounded like three cracks in quick succession. As an ex-military member, Lewis said he recognized the sound as gunshots.
Lewis, who has lived on Del Ray Road for four years, said while police are often in the neighbourhood, he feels safe at home.
“You don’t know what’s going on in the neighbourhood; you don’t know when it’s going on and you don’t know why,” he said.
Police tape stretched across multiple houses on Del Ray Road, and cruisers blocked off entrances to the alley.
Investigators don’t believe the shooting was random.
Less than a kilometre from the scene, 27-year-old David Quach was shot to death in what police have called a targeted attack on Aug. 22. Investigators believe Quach was gunned down while he was in a parked car in the driveway along the 7000 block of California Boulevard N.E.
One suspect, Said Abdulbaki, has been charged with second-degree murder, but police are still searching for clues.
